Second Annual Fun Run

It was a gorgeous, muggy morning at the 2nd Annual Nancy's Butterfly Fund Fun Run. Nan would have loved the 5K course through the woods...I enjoyed it but did have to walk a bit more than I usually do. I think the fact I got up at 5:00 AM to get ready for the run didn't help. Thank goodness it was non-competitive! :)

Now that the Run is over, I feel I can really let myself feel the loss and grief that accompanies this time period. I miss her often, of course, but right around now I'm fully into "two years ago today..." thoughts, and it's been hard to set those aside for the sake of the Fund.

In an interview today, one of the questions I was asked (not aired) was "if you could talk to Nancy today, what would you tell her?" I laughed and responded that I talk to her all the time! I must have sounded a bit crazy, but she is a beautiful presence in my life. I feel blessed to have known her as long as I did.

What I would say, what I do say, is "I love you, Nancy. I miss you. Thank you for being my friend."

One year ago today

Honestly, I don't know that I can say much more than that. It has certainly been the worst year of my life, and yet every second of it is precious. Having Nancy in my heart lends me strength in difficult circumstances, and her shining examples of patience and attention have given me a roadmap for how to be a better mother and friend.

Why does this suburban housewife have such a lasting impact? If you ever met her, you know - she was larger than life, and embraced life with a passion and intensity I have rarely known. She really cared about people and embodied that caring in word and deed. She was not in any way perfect, but her flaws were also identified, embraced and celebrated.

So even though I grieve, I know that she lived her short time on earth extremely well. Her legacy lives on in the dozens of friends, hundreds of people touched by her story, the present and future women we will help with Nancy's Butterfly Fund, and of course, in her beautiful daughters and her family in Canada. Those children continue to be held in Nancy's "tunnel of love."

Peace to all who grieve with me on this day. Lift a glass to Nancy and to yourself, it's what she would have wanted.

St. Rita's Ministry Prayer Vigil 5/19/2009

Now that this can become a blog again and not be an official website for Nancy's Butterfly Fund, I can go back to posting like a blogger. Last night I had the good fortune to be invited to present the Fund at the St. Rita's Ministry Prayer Vigil at St. Michael the Archangel church in Cary. This is what I said -- crying the entire time, I might add.

Last year at about this time, I was planning a going-away party for my best friend Nancy Cooper. It was a difficult party to plan, not only because of the emotional burden – I was so sad she was leaving, but so supportive of the move and excited for her at the same time – but also because the date was a moving target. Nancy's moving date was not in her control, as she had no financial resources of her own beyond a weekly cash allowance. With no access to a credit card, she could not arrange for the moving van.

Even given this constraint, Nancy had managed to plan a new life for her and her girls in Canada. Her sister Krista had prepared a room for them, and Nancy had set up three job interviews. She had found a pre-school nearby for Bella. At the “Saddest Party Ever” - as I titled it – her large and generous group of friends were all going to bring money to help defray the moving expenses and to help her get on her feet. When the moving van was finally arranged for, I bought a one-way ticket from Canada so that I could help her drive up with the girls. Everything was settled, we thought...she was ready to leave and start over.

Unfortunately, the separation agreement, when it arrived that week, was not signed. The moving van was called off. The move was cancelled. We went ahead and had the party anyway, since selfishly we were happy she was staying – and we wanted to show our unconditional support for her in her very difficult situation. We celebrated her continuing presence in our lives, as we had all feared the hole she would leave when she moved.

Now she is gone forever, and that hole is a terrible chasm. Nancy was the best friend of so many, she was so integral to our lives, and we know we can never replace her. She was the one we called when we were upset, or sad, or angry, and we are more upset, sad and angry than we have ever been.

In the months since Nancy's death, we have questioned how we can bring something positive from this devastation; our answer has become our desire to help other women and children leaving domestic violence situations. This is the chrysalis for Nancy’s Butterfly Fund. Our mission is to minimize the financial obstacles that may prevent women from leaving violent unsafe homes. The fund will provide financial assistance for individuals and families participating in InterAct’s programs and services. Specifically, the assistance fund may help with apartment and utility deposits, childcare, education, food, transportation and other basic financial needs and services. In essence, this is what we were prepared to do for Nancy at her going-away party, but we have realized that not everyone has access to that kind of help.

To honor Nancy, we have planned several events to raise funds for Nancy's Butterfly Fund – first, a black-tie optional Gala which we are sure that Nancy would have been excited to buy a dress for on June 13th, and second, a Family Fun Run on the anniversary of her death. We hope these upcoming events help us to remember Nancy's wonderful spirit, and to share her zest for life with the community.

Sometimes financial obstacles make the difference between leaving and staying. If we can help one family reach safety, if we can raise awareness in an abused woman that this is not her fault, and that it can happen to anyone, if we can save one life – well, it will never be enough, but it will be a start.

CARY, NC - Friends of Cary murder victim Nancy Cooper announce the creation of Nancy’s Butterfly Fund, a fund that will provide financial assistance to women and their children leaving abusive relationships. Nancy’s Butterfly Fund will be managed by Interact, a renowned local nonprofit agency that provides safety, support and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Organizers say their goal is to minimize the financial obstacles that may prevent women from leaving violent unsafe homes. The fund will provide financial assistance for individuals and families participating in Interact’s programs and services. Specifically, the assistance fund may help with apartment and utility deposits, childcare, education, food, transportation and other basic financial needs and services .

“In the days immediately following Nancy's death, a butterfly, both large and vivid, seemed to be a constant guest in our neighborhood and it came to symbolize our departed friend. We have selected the butterfly symbol to memorialize, honor Nancy and to support victims whose lives are impacted by dysfunctional domestic violence relationships,” said Garry Rentz, Nancy Cooper’s father.

The inaugural event to raise money for Nancy’s Butterfly Fund will be held on June 13, 2009 at Life Time Fitness in Cary, North Carolina. Cooper, an avid runner, was a member of the club. The fundraiser will include a silent auction, live music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. It will give everyone who attends a chance to support the cause while having fun, something Cooper would have enjoyed.

Officer of the year

I saw a wonderful article in the Cary News today - Officer of the year is low-key leader. While I haven't interacted directly with Det. Daniels, one section of the article certainly resonated (quoted below). Congratulations, Det. Daniels, and thank you!

And he touted Daniels’ leadership and mentoring of two young detectives who assisted Daniels in investigating three homicides in 2008.

“Both of these detectives have grown professionally because of working with Detective Daniels and have developed a deep and profound respect for him that words alone can’t measure,” Byrd said in his nomination. “This is due in part to his unassuming approach to individuals that wants those working with him to achieve their maximum potential. His approach works because he doesn’t seek credit or recognition for himself but because he is always focused on the greater good.”

It was Nancy's eldest daughter's birthday this week. Happy Birthday!

Adopt a Highway

Someone or some group has adopted a section of Dillard Drive starting at Walnut Street and heading towards Piney Plains "in memory of Nancy Cooper". I would love it if whoever has done this will take the opportunity to let me know personally or by posting a comment on this blog when the cleanup days are. It's a wonderful memorial, especially since Nancy actually used to walk or roller-blade that stretch of road back when they first moved here...back when there weren't even any sidewalks! The Coopers did not own a car at first and then had only one for a year, so Nancy would walk or rollerblade with a backpack on her back to do errands, grocery shop or to go see a movie at Crossroads.

My understanding from this website is that cleanups are performed four times a year. Count me in!

Furnishings

It hurt to see the furnishings hauled away today.

I remember when the house was empty back in 2001. I remember the funny red sofas from the store in Canada. I remember the dining room which was perfect for turning cartwheels in. I remember the refinishing of the old kitchen table. I remember sending back the sofas when the wrong ones arrived. I remember the months-long deliberations on the fabric for the chairs in the dining room, and then the further wait for the table to be shipped from the artisan in Canada, and finally the inaugural dinner. I remember the similar deliberations about the wing-back chair, and then some regrets on the final choice. I remember how beautiful the key table was, and how one was not allowed to actually put keys on it for fear of scratches...and then I remember the day the front door flew open and scratched the table.

I know they are just things, but Nancy's esthetic and consideration and love of design informed these things. I'm so sad that the girls will not have the joy of passing along the heirloom-quality items to their children, along with the stories.

Don't expect many postings here, but please do keep the Memorial Fund in mind, for the girls. They have had so much taken away.

We have been very careful not to speculate in the media as to how or why or by whom Nancy was murdered.

We will continue that stance.

Any and all pertinent communications are done in a legal framework. The media are publicizing what should be a private matter, but that is not under our control, nor is it anything we desire.

Nancy is dead. Nancy has been silenced. It is the civic duty of those she confided in to provide her a voice.

Plans are underway to extend the trail one mile east to the Publix Shopping center located at the corner of South Cobb Drive and the East-West Connector. There will be parking, shops, and restaurants.
Take I-285 to exit number 15-South Cobb Drive. South Cobb Drive exit is near mile marker 14 on I-285. South Cobb Drive is Hwy. 280/ Smyrna/ Chattahoochee Tech. Go outside the perimeter away from the large smokestack, onto South Cobb Drive.
Go to mile marker 2.5 on South Cobb Drive.
Turn left on Cooper Lake Road and pass a small lake on the right. From the lake to Mavell Road is a short drive.
Turn left on Mavell Road (Nickajack Elementary).
Mavell Road dead-ends into the Silver Comet parking lot at the trail's starting point.

John Mayer, rain or shine

Olympics

So I'm sitting here watching the Olympics, and just wanted to share a few things about Nancy...

- She had Olympic dreams in women's ice hockey, but was sidelined by a knee injury.
- She would watch her daughter excel in so many sports at such a young age (gymnastics, ice skating, swimming)...and wonder "which sport will she focus on"? She never had any doubt that her daughters would embrace sport and competition as she had...a completely positive endeavor.
- She loved running and tried to teach so many of us how to be runners. Some more successfully than others! (I'm not in that category, sadly)
- She also enjoyed working out at the gym and the trainer who runs the "boot camp" program called her his "warrior".

Most of us are taking a week or so to try to get back to our lives and our families, get some sleep, etc. Plus, we really cannot comment on anything at the moment and are back to our "no press or other media" stance.

I'm hoping to devote some time between now and Sunday to finally setting up the Memorial website and I'll post some Nancy stories there. There are so many!

Back to life, but reality? Probably not for a while.

Most of us who work went back to work today. It was, for me, somewhat of a relief...but there is still so much work to be done for Nancy and the girls that it almost seems like I was going to a second job. I did take advantage of the couch we have at work to take an hour's nap, which was much needed.

I posted Michael Morwick's beautiful graphic for the Memorial Fund -- clicking on the picture will take you directly to the post describing how to make donations.

A committee is forming for the Nancy Fun Run, and a tentative timeframe of October has been kicked around.

I still need to set up a Memorial website to collect stories, but be assured that all the well-wishes so far are going to be collected into a book for the family.

Other plans need to wait on more sleep.

Grief, solace, music, memories

The Memorial yesterday was beautiful. I'm so thankful to the members of our group who managed to pull it together on such short notice and with such style -- Nancy would have been proud.

Visitors were asked to write messages in memory books as they arrived, as John Mayer's song "Say" played in the background. The short walk through the woods to the amphitheater reminded me of the dozens of times we had been there together. When Bella came in, I almost expected her to have her face painted as a shining butterfly.

Hundreds of white roses in gorgeous arrangements surrounded two beautiful portraits of Nancy with her children by Elizabeth Galecke. Flutist Catherine LeGrand and classical guitarist Randy Reed played uplifting, soothing music as we came together to mourn and remember. During the service, Julia Cobley, the girls' music teacher, sung several songs. She was accompanied by a harpist, Anita Burroughs-Price. Each song brought me to tears.

A family member shared with me later that the service helped him get a lot of grief out. I felt the same way.

I'm not sure how much money was raised for The Nancy Cooper Memorial Fund, but last night a friend set a lofty goal for Bella and Katie, and I for one hope it's met. Please help us provide for the two people Nancy lived for. They won't be able to know their mother in person, but they will certainly know what kind of person she was, and how much she affected the lives around her.

I'm hoping to rest today, but we will be setting up a website where people can record their memories or messages of support. I will also be compiling all the wonderful sentiments that have been sent via email or the volunteer form, and all of this will be made into a book for the family.

Memorial Details

A public memorial will be held tomorrow, Saturday July 19th at the Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary, NC from 2:30-4:30 PM.

It is a beautiful outdoor space that Nancy loved, especially for the summer NC Symphony concerts.

The family would love attendees to write something in the guest books, as these will be saved for the children to see later how much their mother was loved and cherished in this community.

A fund for the children is in the process of being set up, but there will at the very least be a drop box for contributions (I'll revise this post when I know to whom a check should be made out).

A service in Canada is also being planned for sometime next week; details will be posted when they become available.

I wanted to assure all of you who were so invested in the search for Nancy that a public Memorial service is planned imminently. Details will be released a bit later today, if I don't get a chance to blast an email, please check back here. They will also be released to the media, but I may have more specific information.

I know many of the volunteers are disappointed not to be part of the vigil tonight. Your efforts on behalf of Nancy and the family are not at all forgotten...and we all look forward to seeing you at the Memorial. I met so many amazing people on Saturday and Sunday.

Private Candlelight Vigil

A candlelight vigil and remembrance is planned for Friday evening, but it is private and by invitation only.

A memorial service is in the works, we'll post details as soon as they are ironed out.

Other ways to honor Nancy are being discussed, but frankly we're all pretty exhausted and might need some time to grieve privately and be with our families.

The family have asked that all the flyers be removed and taken down (which I haven't seen any today, so that may already be well accomplished) and that it would be a welcome gesture to tie a white ribbon around a tree as a memorial gesture.

Remembering

We've had several inquiries about whether we would be organizing a vigil or setting up a site where people can share stories...I just wanted to say we are hoping to plan several events and avenues for remembering Nancy. We'll post details here when those details are worked out, and will also blast an email to all of the hundreds of people who have provided their email adresses.

Talking to your kids

The team of mental health professionals who met with us tonight will be there again Wednesday evening at 5:00 PM to focus on adult grief issues. Child care will be available in an adjoining room, so feel free to bring them, there will definitely be at least three children there to play with.

A few brief notes that we took that I'd like to share...perhaps other members can forward theirs to me or post comments:

It's OK to model grief (to be sad in front of your friends)
How you approach your children is specific to the child and their age and developmental level.
Answer their questions, but don't elaborate. Only answer the question that is asked. When a child has the information he or she can process, he or she will stop asking questions.
Expect regression (baby talk, bedwetting, thumb-sucking, wanting to be in bed with you), and it's OK to regress with them.
Empower the kids, helping them to understand what it means to be safe.
Identify people who help us to be safe (teachers, parents, police officers)
Reflect back emotions -- ex. if your kids suddenly bite each other, say something like "you must be really angry to be biting, huh?"
Validate their fears, validate their emotions

Project Enlightenment was mentioned as a good resource, as was Hospice.

There has been a continuous presence at the Lutheran Church today as we support each other and prepare to restart our efforts once we hear from the coroner. There is another press conference scheduled for 5:00 PM.

It was not in a pond as initially reported, but on the banks of a storm water drain runoff.

The autopsy will be conducted today by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Chapel Hill.

Still officially a missing persons case.

The body was found within a 5-mile radius of the home.

Both Cary Police and Wake County Police were working the scene.

If it is Nancy, the case will come under Cary Police jurisdiction, if not, Wake County will take jurisdiction.

Cause of death, or length of days the remains had been there were not specified.

When asked why a family member had not been asked to identify the body, the Chief said that they could not tell if this was Nancy, and the family should not be subjected unnecessarily. If it is not Nancy, the family of the woman found should be the ones to do the identification.

Reporters asked for details of the person who made the 911 call on discovering the body, but none were released other than that it came in at around 7:30 PM.

The City Bureau of Investigation are getting involved today.

We continue to hope this is not Nancy, and continue to appreciate the outpouring of support and love -- it is completely appropriate to the kind of shining light Nancy is.

Tragic News

A female body was found this evening near the vicinity of our search area. We do not know if this is Nancy, and still hope for her safe return. It is tragic no matter who it is -- someone has lost a daughter, a friend.

While we still plan to meet with volunteers tomorrow at Resurrection Lutheran church on the corner of Lochmere West and Kildaire Farm Road, our main focus will be the following:

Celebrate Nancy. If you knew her, please start thinking of those quintessential Nancy stories that make her what she is. If they are personal, write them down in a personal journal. If they can be shared, please consider sharing them.

Plan the next steps for when we get news from the coroner's office

Be there as a community for each other and the family

It has been suggested to us that we pause our search efforts for the time being, but we want to make sure that we can ramp back up.

We could use journals, pens and computers with wireless access so that stories might be written down online or on paper.

Fantastic efforts by Lifetime Fitness members today

Having spent the entire day so far at the Lifetime Fitness coordination desk, I have been continually amazed at the efforts of people who walked in and said "tell me where to go look"

Not only have people gone out and covered large areas of difficult terrain, but they've come back to update us on what they did manage to cover and in many cases have asked for additional areas to go back out and search.

With the rain starting an hour or so back, it's putting a damper on our efforts. Even so, the number of soaking wet searchers that still asked for more has been incredible.

However, the rain seems to have dampened the flow of new volunteers so we're going to consolidate our efforts to coordinate from the Java Jive location for the remainder of this afternoon and early evening.

Thanks to all of you for all the efforts to far.

I just finished updating the search map we're maintaining on Google.

It shows the areas that have been covered by volunteers reporting into both the Java Jive and Lifetime Fitness search coordination points.

If you've independently searched any area, please let us know via the contact form below so that we can keep people focussed on new areas that have zero coverage.

Of course, as the police will tell you, searching twice or more is standard practice so it certainly is not a waste of effort to look again. Especially relevant given the heavily wooded areas and many small gullys involved in much of this search area.

Rainy day in Cary, but the volunteering is still amazing

People are still showing up in droves at the Java Jive site, and I'm sure the same goes for Lifetime Fitness. We're attempting to update the maps online but I know I'm having some connectivity issues today. That should hopefully be solved tomorrow when we move to Resurrection Lutheran Church at 100 Lochmere Drive W.

If you don't want to stop by one of the coordination sites (and, believe me, they are busy) please feel free to pick a likely area on the map and post that you have checked there. Or print out flyers (I'll attempt to upload it) and take them to any businesses that are willing to keep them by the register. Also, the Kinko's next to Barnes & Noble across from the mall has the PDF there and can make copies. Feel free to post them pretty far afield, we need her face out there.

We are also interested in fanning out today to more construction sites, wooded areas, streams, etc. The paths less travelled...but please, please, go in groups or pairs and be careful!

Our dear friend Nancy has been missing since Saturday, July 12, 2008. If you have any information or are willing to help canvass neighborhoods or post flyers, please join us at Java Jive on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary, NC or at Lifetime Fitness on Regency Parkway today (Monday, July 14) starting at 9:00 am. We had a tremendous turnout today of volunteers, but every set of eyes and feet count!

If you yourself are a blogger or have any media contacts, please link to this blog. We will be posting any updated information on search efforts or results here. Hopefully we will add a way to sign up for different types of support -- we realize not everyone can get out there and walk.
